Top tier.
Lemme tell you. I love Pattern Beauty. Although I haven’t used it, I am in love with their brand and positioning in the hair industry.
Pattern Beauty seems to be one of those brands that remembers the purpose of the natural hair movement. I feel like, at one point the goal was forgotten & it was all a cash grab. Especially considering how everyone switched from the “creamy crack” to natural or nothing back in 2010+.
Pattern Beauty is fun and in alignment with the bra
nd that Tracee Ellis Ross has already created.
When you think of Tracee, you think beautiful big hair, and beautiful big personality!
Pattern makes sense for her, but it isn’t riding on her coat tail. One thing I see with celebrity owned brands is that they rely on the celebrities likeness to create brand traction.
even the celebrities make mistakes.
But I don’t see that with Pattern.
Pattern has that same authentic & confident feel like Fenty does (we will talk Fenty in another Newsletter)
Pattern Beauty is putting in the work to stand on its own by speaking directly to its customer.
Here are the three things Pattern Beauty is doing perfectly:
1. Language on the Pattern Beauty social media and website suggest that curls are the focus.
“Give your hair the spa day it deserves”
“All the essentials for a self-care wash day”
“The real magic-makers for perfectly clumped curls”
Oh and my fave is this:
Curl-Conscious Heat
Especially because the details on the blow dryer back up the statement with “ reduces dry time”.
2. Photos are representative of the faces and curls we see on a daily basis + QUALITY
Likeeee cmonnnn! This is what the girls should be taking notes on. And I love that It feels like people I could know or Tracee could know. Everyone looks so good and familiar.
And don’t get me started on these shots. Most CEOs feel they have to do the “laptop / coffee mug” shots. But you don’t. You can have fun. You can show personality. Make it more. Go Big friend.
Quick tip: Write down three to five things about you or things you like to do and include them in your next shoot!
3. They created resources: Curl Guide
Which is genius because when I think about all the times I went to buy something for my natural hair… I would questions if this product was for MY hair type. Especially since I’m a kinky, curly, 4c hair type kind of girl. This guide is a game changer in the hair industry because it creates a whole nother space for consumers to gain a better understanding of this product being “for them”. Without question.
The big brands aren’t very different from what you’re creating. Although budgets may be different, your access to knowledge on how to create your own brand that can stand with millions of others is all the same.
You’re takeaways from this UFO:
Know your audience = Know what language to use. - And to make the most of this try having a “focus group” aka asking your clients what they would like to see from your brand (only ask family and friends if they already are #teamyou)
Spend time getting to know yourself so that you can develop a business that is aligned with who you are, who you want to be, and the trajectory of your future. This is pivotal because you’ll feel excited when you start your business, however to continue to push the needle forward you’ll need to have regular self-check-ins.
Get quality photos. Emphasis on quality. Work with a photographer. Quality could be the difference between being booked or not booked. You know what the real kicker is, getting photos that represent who you are and your personality. Want to scream in your photos? Do it!
Pattern Beauty is a disruptive brand that allows customers to feel seen and heard in a sea of noise and missed marks from other companies. You can create an authentic brand that shifts the norm, speaks to your audience, and leaves a lasting impression that people can’t get enough of. Learn that from Pattern.
